Perry was born to actor Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. Two of her earliest television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the character. In fear of stress, her parents didn't want to see performing before turning 18. Perry was shy in high-school and was not a performer. The actress began her acting career in the year 2000 at Northwestern University to gain friends as she transferred from Boston University. Following her graduation, Perry moved into New York to search for TV work, landing a few roles in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent However, she was stricken by homelessness and brought Perry back home to California which is where she discovered theatre work. In 2013 she performed in The Other Place on Broadway alongside her mother. Perry was in the show with their father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of The Family, an ABC drama The Family in 2016. Her father played her on The ABC Drama Scandal. Also, she was cast on her role on the CBS show The Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon as a version younger than Mary Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's mother. She got the part through an open audition despite having a connection to this character.
